Legitimization of drivers and vehicles is an important element for traffic supervisory guidelines and often as part of road safety initiatives.

Drivers have to show that they are authorized to drive by presenting a legitimate driving licence. A further request may be to prove that the vehicle has been registered.

The legal framework relating to the driver and vehicle cards can be of national or, as with the European Union, of a multinational nature. Besides legal aspects, international standards, issued by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), play an important role in the definition of documents for drivers and vehicles.
